How much does a DJ cost in Bali?

Short answer: a professional DJ for a Bali wedding or villa party costs between Rp 2,500,000 and Rp 8,000,000 for the night, depending on who you book and what is bundled. The wide range is mostly travel and equipment, not the set itself. Here is how the number is built, so you can read any quote you receive.

The set fee

A professional set is 3 to 4 hours and should include the booth equipment (two Pioneer CDJ 2000 or 3000 Nexus 2 and a DJM mixer, or a controller for villa setups), two active monitors, a pre-event brief and a hospitality rider. Overtime is charged by the hour, agreed on the night if the floor is still going.

A local Bali resident DJ without a following will usually quote Rp 1,500,000 to Rp 2,500,000 for that set length. A visiting DJ with a real club résumé sits in the Rp 3,000,000 to Rp 5,000,000 band, and a name that fills beach clubs on the island can be well above that. The travel package

For a DJ flying in from Jakarta, insist that the travel is itemised rather than hidden in a higher fee. A typical package is:

• Two return flights on Garuda, Batik or Citilink. Two, because a tour manager or partner travels with her; this is standard for touring DJs.
• One hotel room, 3 or 5 star, one night.
• Meals at Rp 250,000 per day for two people.
• One in-town pickup.

Booked a few weeks out, that is roughly Rp 2,500,000 to Rp 4,000,000 on top of the set, depending on the fares and the hotel you choose. Book the flights late in high season and it climbs.

Sound for the room

The set fee covers the booth. It does not cover a PA for two hundred people on a lawn. Beach clubs and most wedding venues in Seminyak, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua have a house system the DJ plugs into. Villas usually do not, and your planner's sound supplier will quote Rp 1,500,000 to Rp 4,000,000 for speakers, subs and a technician for the night. Ask about this before the date is fixed; it is the cost couples most often forget.

What is not worth paying for

• A "wedding package" with lighting and MC bundled. Your planner already has both. Pay the DJ for the DJ.
• A ceremony playlist fee. Ceremony music is a brief, not a separate service. It is part of the same booking.
• An agency margin. Booking direct on WhatsApp removes 15 to 25 percent that would otherwise be added on top.

A realistic total

For a villa wedding of eighty to a hundred and fifty guests, expect the middle of that range. For a beach club with its own system, the low end.

How to keep it down

• Fix the date early so flights are booked at a normal fare.
• Pair the wedding with the welcome dinner or the recovery brunch to share the travel.
• Choose a venue with a house system if a lawn or villa is not essential to you.
• Decide overtime in advance. An extra hour agreed beforehand is cheaper than a late-night scramble for a PA extension.
